Hans Tietmeyer

President of the Deutsche Bundesbank 1993-1999

Until August 1999 Dr. Hans Tietmeyer was the President of the Deutsche Bundesbank and remains one of the most important figures in European finance.

Dr. Tietmeyer was born in 1931 and was educated at the Universities of Münster, Bonn and Cologne. Following an academic background in which his thinking was influenced by Alfred Muller-Armack and Ludwig Erhard he moved into international economics and banking.

In 1962 he started his career in the Federal Ministry of Economics. It was in 1982 that he became Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, where he was responsible for issues related to financial policy, international monetary policy, EU matters and the preparation of World Economic Summits.

Dr. Hans Tietmeyer became a Member of the Board of Directors of the Deutsche Bundesbank and of the Cent/al Bank Council in 1990, with responsibility for foreign countries, international monetary issues, organisations and agreements. After two years as Vice President he became President of the Deutsche Bundesbank in 1993, a position he held until August 1999.

He has published more than 100 articles on the subject of economics and is the recipient of many prestigious awards and prizes. In his book, The Social Market Economy and Monetary Stability, he addresses subjects such as employment, social security and economic structural change, as well as the significance of monetary stability.
