Martina Navratilova won an astonishing 59 Grand Slam titles, including 18 singles, 31 women's doubles, and 10 mixed doubles in a remarkable career that includes a total of 167 singles and 178 doubles titles, both all-time records for tennis players, male or female. Other records include one of only three people who have won all three titles (singles, doubles, and mixed doubles) at each of the four Grand Slam events, a 74-match singles winning streak, a 109-match doubles winning streak, nine Wimbledon singles titles, and six consecutive Grand Slam titles.
Martina Navratilova was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame in 2000, but continued to play (winning on the WTA Tour through October 2006) until retiring after winning the U.S. Open mixed doubles a month before her 50th birthday. Born in Prague in 1956 in the same hospital as her mother, Martina Navratilova was about 8 years old when she decided to make tennis her passion. With no money in the game back then, her family did everything to make that happen. Martina defected to the U.S. in 1975 to escape the repressive regime in Czechoslovakia.
Martina Navratilova was one of the first international sports figures to openly state that she was gay in 1981. She is a staunch supporter of women's issues, gay rights, ethical treatment of animals, environmental protection, and AIDS research. Martina founded the Rainbow Card, which funds the non-profit Rainbow Endowment. The Endowment has raised over $2 million dollars to date.
