Michelle Akers

Michelle Akers inspires and motivates her audiences with her story of success in the face of extreme adversity. In 1991, she was a four-time collegiate All-American, World Cup champion, was the first woman player to receive a paid endorsement, and was named the best women's soccer player in the world. By 1996 this had all come crashing down. Akers was diagnosed with chronic fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome. She couldn't manage to get out of bed, much less run and play soccer. Migraines racked her head, and she couldn't sleep through the night. On top of all this, her four-year marriage ended. Following her team's 1996 Olympic victory, she left the game, uncertain about her future. Amazingly, Akers positive attitude, spiritual conviction, and unwillingness to give up led to a return to the game she loves in 1997. Akers continues to be one of the most dominating players in women's soccer. Still suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, she was an integral part in the U.S. National Team's recent victory in the women's world cup.
