Peter Beinart

Senior Political Writer, The Daily Beast, Senior Fellow at the New America Foundation, Associate Professor of Journalism and Political Science at City University of New York

"Understanding intellectual history is important not because the historical analogies are exact, but because most people don't think of great ideas de nouveau." Peter Beinart

Peter Beinart is hailed as a wunderkind by peers, colleagues, and politicos. A Schwartz Senior Fellow at the New America Foundation and a contributor to Time as well as Senior Political Writer at The Daily Beast, Beinart burst onto the political punditry scene immediately after graduating from Oxford in 1995. Since then, he has been Editor of The New Republic magazine, written a widely acclaimed book, and been a featured player on the television news circuit for his expertise and articulate analysis. Currently, he is also Associate Professor of Journalism and Political Science at The City University of New York.

In addition, Beinart has contributed to the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Boston Globe, Atlantic Monthly, Newsweek, Slate, and Reader's Digest. In 2004, The Week named him columnist of the year. His new book, The Icarus Syndrome: How American Triumph Produces American Tragedy, will be published by HarperCollins in June 2010.

Beinart graduated from Yale University, winning a Rhodes scholarship for graduate study at Oxford. After graduating Oxford he became The New Republic's managing editor. He became senior editor in 1997, and from 1999 to 2006 served as the magazine's Editor. Beinart was also a Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations from 2007 to 2009.

Variety of Platforms. He has appeared on Meet the Press, This Week with George Stephanopoulos, Charlie Rose, The McLaughlin Group, MTV, The Colbert Report, and many other television and radio programs. He provided commentary for CNN from the 2004 Democratic and Republican conventions.

The Good Fight was widely praised for its insight and depth. Thomas Friedman of the New York Times wrote that Beinart "takes us on a vigorous and entertaining search for a usable past. His reasoning must be heard." And Madeleine Albright declared that it is "filled with apt insights and common sense," recommending it to both liberals and conservatives.

Setting the Bar for the New Democratic Era. The election of Barack Obama signals a shift in power, not only from Republican to Democratic control, but a fundamental shift in expectations of the American people. With a new outlook and a renewed hope for a strong Democratic agenda, the Party sees the election of Obama as a major event with the potential to mark the inauguration of the next great Democratic president in the tradition of FDR and LBJ. Beinart discusses the expectations, the realities, and whether President Obama can live up to the standard being set for him at this early stage.

Political Capital, Capitalism, and the Obama Administration. For the first time in recent memory, the Democratic candidate for president out-fundraised his Republican counterpart. Congress has shifted to the left. There are fewer and fewer blue dog Democrats. Various demographics that are traditionally Republican have begun to shrink. What does this all mean? Beinart explains how the early days of the Obama presidency will not be a repeat of the Clinton era--the early days of the Reagan presidency is a closer parallel. The Obama administration features many noted economists whose opinions and actions will be determined by data rather than ideology. Beinart's presentation takes the long, historical view to put these changes in context and explain how American enterprise has responded and reacted to fundamental shifts in American policy.
