Former Ambassador to Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Ambassador Wyche Fowler was nominated by President Clinton on June 10, 1996 as U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He arrived in Riyadh August 26, 1996, in the aftermath of two terrorist bombings that killed over 200 Americans. While there, Ambassador Fowler was responsible for the direction, coordination, and supervision of all employees, as well as ensuring the security and protection of the mission and its personnel. Ambassador Fowler served as principal officer in charge of all executive branch employees in Saudi Arabia, including Consulates, three military operations, and the Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation. Prior to his appointment to Saudi Arabia, Ambassador Fowler practiced law at Powell, Goldstein, Frazer & Murphy. He was a partner in the Washington D.C. office of the firm, concentrating on issues ranging from tax policy to international affairs. Ambassador Fowler also served 16 years in the United States Congress. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986 by the state of Georgia, he was appointed Deputy Floor Leader by Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, and helped to mold a bipartisan consensus for major public issues. During these years, he was a member of the Senate Appropriations, Budget, Energy and Agriculture Committees. First elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1977, he represented Georgia's 5th Congressional District (Atlanta area) for ten years. Currently, Ambassador Fowler is a visiting professor at Harvard University in their Kennedy School of International Affairs, and he was appointed by President Clinton for the Commission on the Role of the Intelligence Community. Ambassador Fowler also holds positions as a board member of Carter Center, member of the Advisory Council of the Dean Rusk Program at Davidson College, and member of the Ambassador's Roundtable for UNICEF. He was twice named Solar Man of the Year for work on alternative energy development and conservation.
