Case Study: Design an Effective Stage

The Event: CBA Live 2010

The Challenge: Designing a stage and set to reflect the theme of the conference. CBA Live 2010 was all about breaking traditional molds, making connections, and sharing the latest trends for tomorrow. The Consumer Bankers Association wanted the staging of the general sessions to elevate the content, and acts as a connector between the experts and the audience.

The Solution: An innovative design featuring two circular stages and a large video screen in between set the tone for the general sessions. One stage featured a podium for keynotes, and a news desk for Scott McKain, the event host. The other stage was an informal set for panel discussions and interviews, with plush chairs and a low table, in the style of Oprah or ESPN’s The Sports Reporters.

Having two stages gave the event an energy and flow, and broke up the monotony of 3 full days of keynotes. Small innovations like having the event host introduce a speaker from Stage 2, and then having the speaker emerge on Stage 1, recaptured the audiences attention and made them sit up and take notice. Because each stage was smaller than a traditional model, there was never a feeling of emptiness in the room. The feeling of community, energy, and interactivity was felt throughout the Great Hall.
