Leading Authorities recently handled all staging, sound, and lighting (among other tasks) for the closing party of Doug Aitken’s “Song 1” exhibit at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. For that one night, the museum transformed the video installation into live performance art. This event was the culmination of the exhibit, which had featured a 360-degree film loop projected on the Hirshhorn’s cylindrical exterior wall.
The closing event, called Song 1: A Happening, featured performances from No Age, Animal Collective’s Geologist, High Places, Tim McAfee Lewis and Leo Gallo, Oneohtrix Point Never, and Nicholas Jaar. Because the piece’s soundtrack was scored by various interpretations of the Flamingo’s famous “I Only Have Eyes for You,” the event featured the artists’ covers of the same song, each adding new flavor to the experience.
