Colonel Greg Gadson survived the very worst of war, but this highly decorated American soldier refused to let challenging circumstances defeat him. After an IED attack claimed both of his legs, Gadson refused to quit. His life is now a portrait of courage in the face of great adversity, and he understands that hard work and determination are key factors in overcoming life-altering setbacks, including the 22 surgeries he required after his accident.

Gadson, who served in every major conflict of the last two decades, is still on active duty and has been directing the Army’s Wounded Warrior Program since 2010. It was his first acting role, though, that demanded of him new physical and mental strength, but the first-time actor did not shy away from the challenge. Leading Authorities recently handled all staging, sound, and lighting (among other tasks) for the closing party of Doug Aitken’s “Song 1” exhibit at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. For that one night, the museum transformed the video installation into live performance art. This event was the culmination of the exhibit, which had featured a 360-degree film loop projected on the Hirshhorn’s cylindrical exterior wall.

The closing event, called Song 1: A Happening, featured performances from No Age, Animal Collective’s Geologist, High Places, Tim McAfee Lewis and Leo Gallo, Oneohtrix Point Never, and Nicholas Jaar. Because the piece’s soundtrack was scored by various interpretations of the Flamingo’s famous “I Only Have Eyes for You,” the event featured the artists’ covers of the same song, each adding new flavor to the experience.
