A Congressional Heavyweight. Bob Bennett got his start in politics while managing his father's U.S. Senate reelection campaign in 1962. After a period as an entrepreneur, Bennett ran for a seat in the Senate in 1992 and served the state of Utah for three terms. During this time, Senator Bennett was a member of the Joint Economic Committee, where he was at the center of economic policy discussions and served as its chairman, vice chairman, and senior Senate Republican.
Bennett also served as second in command on the Senate Banking Committee from 2009 until the end of the 111th Congress in 2011. He worked to get the economy back on track by focusing on Social Security and health care reform, authoring a highly-praised bill on Social Security. Bennett was also the ranking member of the Energy and Water Subcommittee of Appropriations.
As a senator, Bennett was at the forefront of health care reform. He was the lead Republican sponsor of the Healthy Americans Act, which guaranteed Americans affordable health coverage. He was also the Chairman of the Republican Health Care Task Force and co-sponsored the Wyden-Bennett alternative to President Obama’s health care plan.
Private Sector Powerhouse. Before he ran for office, Bob Bennett was a successful entrepreneur. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1957 and started his career as a chaplain in the Utah Army National Guard. In 1974, Bennett worked as the public relations director for Summa and vice president for Hughes Airwest. In 1978, he became the president of Osmond Communications.
His most notable business success, however, was his role as CEO of the then startup Franklin International Institute, now known as Franklin Covey. While he was there, he helped the business grow from four employees to more than 1,000. He also assisted in taking the company public on the New York Sock Exchange. Inc Magazine recognized his efforts by naming him their “Entrepreneur of the Year for the Rocky Mountain Region.” Bob Bennett has also written two books – Gaining Control, which sold more than 100,000 copies, and Leap of Faith, a religious work.
