Bob Schieffer

Anchor, Moderator of Face the Nation with Bob Schieffer and CBS News Chief Washington Correspondent

Bob Schieffer

Bob Schieffer has received virtually every award in broadcast journalism, but the greatest honor was bestowed upon him in March 2005 when his alma mater, Texas Christian University, created the Schieffer School of Journalism. Schieffer anchored the CBS Evening News from March 10, 2005 to August 31, 2006, an 18 month period that saw a substantial increase in viewers. Prior to that, Schieffer covered Washington for CBS News for more than 30 years and since 1991 has served as the moderator of Face the Nation, CBS News' Sunday public affairs broadcast. He is also CBS News' chief Washington correspondent and was the moderator for the 2008 Presidential debate at Hofstra University.

Mr. Schieffer is one of the few broadcast or print journalists to have covered all four major beats in the nation's capital - the White House, the Pentagon, the State Department, and Capitol Hill. He became chief Washington correspondent in 1982. He has covered every presidential campaign and been a floor reporter at all of the Democratic and Republican National Conventions since 1972.

Bob Schieffer's Presentation "This Just In," gives listeners an inside look at Washington politics, the people and events, and the epic changes in the past 40 years. Schieffer has covered all four major beats in Washington - the White House, Congress, State Department, and Pentagon - and draws on his deep knowledge of the players and institutions that shape and make the news. A talent raconteur, Schieffer tells the stories behind the stories and touches on such theme as the loss of spontaneity in public life from Lyndon Johnson to George W. Bush. Comfortable with an audience, Schieffer's style is a conversation with his listeners, speaking without notes and without a podium between him and the audience.

Mr. Schieffer is a member of the Broadcasting/Cable Hall of Fame and is the recipient of the 2003 Paul White Award presented by the Radio-Television News Directors Association. The award recognizes an individual's lifetime contribution to electronic journalism and past CBS recipients include Edward R. Murrow ('64), Morley Safer ('66), Walter Cronkite ('70, '81), Don Hewitt ('87), Mike Wallace ('91), Charles Kuralt ('94), Dan Rather ('97) and Ed Bradley (2000).

Over the years, he has won six Emmys and two Sigma Delta Chi Awards. In 2002, the National Press Foundation chose Schieffer as Broadcaster of the Year. He has been a principal anchor for CBS News since 1973, when he was named anchor of the "CBS Sunday Night News."

In August 1996, Schieffer stepped down as anchor of the Saturday edition of the CBS Evening News, a post he held for 20 years. He and his colleague, Dan Rather, now stand as the only two 20-year anchors of a regularly scheduled network news broadcast.

Mr. Schieffer joined CBS News in 1969 and, after a brief stint as a general assignment reporter, was named Pentagon correspondent, a post he held for four years.

Before joining CBS News, he was a reporter at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and, in 1965, became the first reporter from a Texas newspaper to report from Vietnam. Schieffer later became news anchor at WBAP-TV Dallas/Fort Worth, a post that eventually led to his joining CBS News.

He is the author of Face The Nation, which was published on the 50th anniversary of that broadcast, the 2003 The New York Times bestseller, This Just In, What I Couldn't Tell You On TV and the best-selling Acting President, published in 1989. His latest book Bob Schieffer's America was released in December of 2008.
