Pulitzer Prize-Winning Investigative Journalist Associate Editor, The Washington Post
Bob Woodward is regarded as one of America’s preeminent investigative reporters and non-fiction authors. His reporting has significantly impacted the future of American journalism. Woodward has worked for The Washington Post since 1971 as a reporter, and is currently an associate editor of the Post. While a young reporter in 1972, he was teamed up with Carl Bernstein; the two did much, but not all, of the original news reporting on the Watergate scandal that led to numerous government investigations and the eventual resignation of President Richard Nixon. The Washington Post received The Pulitzer Prize for their reporting, and Gene Roberts, former managing editor of The New York Times has called the work of Woodward and Bernstein “maybe the single greatest reporting effort of all time.” Woodward was also the main reporter for the Post’s coverage of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Ten stories won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting—“six carrying the familiar byline of Bob Woodward,” noted the New York Times article announcing the awards.
Woodward has authored or coauthored 16 non-fiction books in the last 35 years, including his latest, Obama’s War. 15 have been national bestsellers and 11 of them have been #1 national non-fiction bestsellers — more #1 national non-fiction bestsellers than any contemporary author. Newsweek Magazine has excerpted six of Woodward’s books in headline-making cover stories; 60 Minutes has done pieces on six of his books; three of his books have been made into movies.
His best-sellers include All the President’s Men (1974) and The Final Days (1976), both Watergate books, co-authored with Bernstein; The Brethren: Inside the Supreme Court (1979), coauthored with Scott Armstrong; Wired: The Short Life and Fast Times of John Belushi (1984); Veil: The Secret Wars of the CIA 1981-1987 (1987); The Commanders (1991) on the first Bush administration and the Gulf War; The Agenda: Inside the Clinton White House (1994); Shadow: Five Presidents and the Legacy of Watergate (1999); and four books about the presidency of George W. Bush—Bush at War (2002), Plan of Attack (2004), State of Denial (2006), and The War Within (2008).
Woodward’s other three books, The Choice (1996) on the presidential election, Maestro: Greenspan’s Fed and the American Boom (2000), and The Secret Man (2005) on Watergate’s Deep Throat were national bestsellers for months.
Woodward has been a recipient of nearly every other major American journalism award, including the Heywood Broun award (1972), Worth Bingham Prize for Investigative Reporting (1972 and 1986), Sigma Delta Chi Award (1973), George Polk Award (1972), William Allen White Medal (2000), and the Gerald R. Ford Prize for Reporting on the Presidency (2002).
