James Jones

Exclusively represented by Leading Authorities speakers bureau, General James Jones has spent his life serving and protecting America and American ideals. As the former commander of U.S. European Command (COMUSEUCOM) and the former Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), he led all military operations for NATO. Later, as National Security Advisor, he brought clear vision and steady leadership to America’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the country’s interests around the world. General Jones, sought-after by politicians and businessmen of every stripe, has combined a four-star résumé and bipartisan admiration. Former U.S. Secretary of Defense William Cohen credits him with a placid demeanor and a “methodical approach to problems, [being] able to view issues at both the strategic and tactical level.” Jones offers a wealth of knowledge and speaks with poise and authority about international politics, energy, and leadership in the 21st century.

Powerful and In Command. Jones excelled at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and was commissioned into the Marine Corps in January 1967. After serving in Vietnam, he rose through the ranks to become the 32nd commandant of the United States Marine Corps in 1999. When he relinquished command as commandant in 2003, Jones assumed the roles of commander, U.S. European Command and Supreme Allied Commander Europe. After 40 years of service, General Jones retired from the Marine Corps in 2007. Later that year, he was appointed as the State Department’s special envoy for Middle East regional security. In this capacity, he worked with Israeli and Palestinian officials to advance regional security in support of the Middle East peace process.

Energy and Security. Jones became the president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for 21st Century Energy in 2007. During his NATO assignment from 2003–2006, he advocated energy security and the defense of critical infrastructures as a core part of NATO’s future missions. With the Chamber, Jones worked to unite energy consumers and producers for a common goal—to increase the variety of the U.S. energy supply and associated infrastructures, to advance international cooperation on energy issues, to protect national energy security, and to promote better understanding of changes to the global climate and its effects on the environment. He left that role in 2009 and, in 2011, became a U.S. Chamber of Commerce fellow, proving strategic advice on policy issues of interest to the business community. Jones also serves as a senior fellow at the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC), where he works on a variety of national security and energy-related issues, and he co-chairs of BPC’s Energy Project.

In 2009, General Jones was appointed National Security Advisor by President Obama. He was instrumental in providing a clear vision and strong leadership to both America’s mission in Iraq and the war in Afghanistan. He consistently emphasized the connections between cyber security, energy, climate change, and homeland security. Upon Jones’ retirement in 2010, President Obama said, “Jim has always been a steady voice in Situation Room sessions, daily briefings, and with meetings with foreign leaders…the American people owe the general a debt for making the nation safer."
