AIDS Activist, Broadway Actress and Musician
Kate Shindle, will next be seen in Paramount's The Stepford Wives, to be released in June, 2004. Shindle first starred in Broadway as Lucy in the musical Jekyll and Hyde. She subsequently earned raves as Sally Bowles in both the Broadway and national touring productions of Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall's Tony-winning Cabaret. The Chicago Tribune said that "this is a young woman well-equipped to be a major Broadway star," while the Orange County Register claimed that "Kate Shindle is more than just a pleasant surprise--she's something of a revelation." She has also starred in regional productions including Gypsy, Into the Woods, Children of Eden, and The Mousetrap.In 1999, Kate graduated from Northwestern University after completing what could be called her first "national tour", which took her 20,000 miles a month as an HIV/AIDS activist and Miss America 1998. Shindle was lauded by AIDS Action, D.C.'s leading HIV/AIDS lobby, for "shattering every ugly stereotype about Miss America" and profiled in Time, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Cosmopolitan, and numerous others. Boston Globe columnist James Carroll singled out Shindle, claiming that "if young American can produces such a beauty whose best features are care and compassion, the hope is alive."Shindle's writing has been published in Newsweek, The Advocate, and Poz. She worked as a special correspondent for NBC's Today Show coverage of the millennial celebration at Times Square, and has been a guest on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Good Morning America, Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher, and numerous cable TV shows including The O'Reilly Factor.Shindle's other activities range from recording (Till Today, a solo album benefiting the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation; Christmases to Come, a collaboration benefiting the National AIDS Fund; and the world premiere recording of Michael John Lachiusa's First Lady Suite) to a well-publicized stint waiting tables at Artie's Deli on New York's Upper West Side. In early 2003, she headlined her first show at Caesars Atlantic City.She lives in Manhattan.
