Keith Hennessey

Former Assistant to the President for Economic Policy
Former Director of the National Economic Council

"These are unprecedented times, and anyone who tells me that they know what the economy will look like as little as six months from now is relying on a lot of guesswork." Keith Hennessey
Keith Hennessey

A trusted advisor in the West Wing, Keith Hennessey served as director of the National Economic Council (NEC) and the assistant to the president for economic policy. Advising President Bush on everything from trade and labor strikes to energy and climate change, Hennessey was at the center of volatile times in American history. Exclusively represented by Leading Authorities speakers bureau, his presentations are insightful and educational about the state of global economics, giving audiences an informed and rounded view of the many issues facing the economy and the country.

Answer To Tough Economic Questions. Keith Hennessy has spent more than 15 years in economic policy roles for senior elected officials. He was the senior White House economic advisor, where he analyzed economic issues and coordinated the design of the president’s economic policies, including macroeconomic issues like tax policy, health care, pensions, Social Security and Medicare reform, energy and climate change, financial markets and institutions policy, housing, transportation, technology and telecommunications, and agriculture. Hennessy also worked on budget and international trade and financial issues. Involved at every level of economic policy, he advised the president on the political, legal, and legislative questions that arose, as well. Hennessey was also involved after decisions were made, serving as part of the core White House team that wrote speeches, communicated policies to the public, and worked with Congress to enact new laws.

Hennessey knows the politics of the economy from both the legislative and the executive side. Before his time in the White House, he worked on Capitol Hill for more than seven years. He served as economics advisor to former Senate Majority leader Trent Lott and as a member of the Senate Budget Committee staff for Senator Pete Domenici (R-NM). Hennessy also worked on the Bipartisan Commission on Entitlement and Tax Reform.

Substantive Breadth and Depth. In addition to advising the president on his administration’s response to the financial crisis of 2008, Hennessey spent more than six years helping to design, enact, and implement the President’s most important economic policies. Among these successful endeavors were several laws cutting taxes; two energy bills; a new climate change negotiating structure; financial regulation reform, health, Social Security, and Medicare reforms; loans to auto manufacturers; terrorism reinsurance; and more.

More about Keith Hennessey. Since leaving the White House, Hennessey has been a television commentator and started a blog called Keith Hennessey, which was named one of the “Top 25 Economics Blogs” by The Wall Street Journal. From 2009–2010 Hennessy also served as a member of the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission. He is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and a professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and the Stanford Law School. He holds a BS in mathematics and political science from Stanford University as well as a master of public policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.

Where We Go From Here. In unprecedented and uncertain times, it is growing harder and harder to predict where the economy will be even six months into the future. As every industry looks for solutions and a strategic direction, the economic environment continues to present new challenges. With experience in national economic policy covering every dynamic industrial sector, Hennessey explains what the economic and financial situation is like right now, covering the whole gamut of issues, from taxation and trade, to health care, energy, and climate change, to entitlement reform and technology policy, to mortgage-backed securities, TARP, and financial market reforms. He customizes his speeches for individual industries and delivers his insights into their immediate futures, placing their concerns and prospects in the big picture.

The Insider's Guide to Health Care. Hennessey provides projections and analysis based on his experience coordinating health care bills as part of the advisory teams for both Senate Majority leader Trent Lott and President George W. Bush. He covers the intersection of policy, politics, and the practical aspects of the health care debate in a down-to-earth way that makes this complex issue more comprehensible. Hennessey has a knack for explaining what's really happening on Capitol Hill, and how it will affect Americans and industry.

The Economic Climate. As the former director of the U.S. economic Council, Keith Hennessey knows firsthand how economic data has a direct effect on presidential decision-making. He examines how to understand and think about the economic numbers, and how data affects the political environment. He also examines the current state of the recession, unemployment numbers, and the deficit.

Climate Change and Energy. Keith Hennessey uses his background in coordinating climate change and energy policy for President George W. Bush to examine the risks and rewards of proposed legislation on a national and global level. He proposes that we can't look at climate change in isolation but rather in tandem with energy issues and economic growth.

Fiscal Strategy. As director of the National Economic Council and assistant to the president for economic policy, Hennessey analyzed economic issues and coordinated the design of President Bush's economic policies. He uses this experience in the trenches of the U.S. economy to analyze the pros and cons of the current administration's fiscal strategy, including the stimulus, national debt, and taxation.
