Patrick Gavin

Staff Writer and Videographer for POLITICO

Patrick Gavin

Patrick Gavin is a staff writer and videographer for POLITICO who covers all things politics. During his time there, he has produced some of the most colorful and revealing portraitures of how Washington and its media culture work, prompting The Atlantic to declare Gavin one of “The 30 Washington Insiders You Should Follow on Twitter” and Business Insider to cite him in its 2011 “The Most Influential People in Media This Year” list.

His works tracks not only the curious nature of Washington’s insider culture but also the machinations that help explain how things do (or don’t) get done in our nation’s capital. His stories are light-hearted and fun and report on what is otherwise left uncovered in politics. Gavin explains how Washington works in untraditional ways, focusing more on the players – especially those behind-the-scenes people you do not normally hear about – than the issues. Gavin also appears frequently as a television commentator on nearly all major networks. Exclusively represented by Leading Authorities speakers bureau, he addresses media, politics, behind-the-scenes Washington, and the upcoming election.

Prolific Writer. Gavin’s writing has appeared in such publications as the Financial Times, The Washington Post, National Public Radio, ESPN’s “Page 2,” The Miami Herald, The Hill, The Christian Science Monitor, The American Prospect, TomPaine.com, Outlook India, Chicago Tribune, The Baltimore Sun, The Birmingham Times, Tages-Anzeiger (Switzerland), Newark’s The Star-Ledger, McSweeneys, San Francisco Call, CounterPunch magazine, Ironminds, History News Network, The Washington Examiner, Hartford Advocate, and more. He is currently working on a book about the events of September 10, 2001, tentatively titled, The Day Before.

Before POLITICO. Prior to joining POLITICO in 2009, Gavin was an associate editorial page editor and a columnist for The Washington Examiner’s Yeas and Nays blog, which covers “people, politics, and power” and documents Washington, DC’s, power players and behind-the-scenes action. During the same time period (from 2005–2008), he was also the editor of FishbowlDC.com, a mediabistro.com blog that covers media news and gossip in the nation’s capital.

From 2003–2005, he served as a writer and media relations officer at the Brookings Institution, a non-partisan public policy think tank in Washington.

Educational Information. Before he became a Washingtonian, Gavin taught middle school history and English at the Princeton Day School in New Jersey. He attended Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, where he earned a bachelors of arts in political science with a minor in writing.

He explains how things do and don’t get done in Washington and why things are they way they are. Gavin describes how a seemingly dysfunctional relationship does not always operate that way, the intricacies of the Pennsylvania Avenue/K Street relationship, and how the media affects and is affected by the political system. In his presentation, he also covers many of the town’s “untold” political stories.

Light-Hearted Politics and DC Power Players. Gavin has produced some of the most colorful and revealing portraitures of how Washington and its media culture work, focusing more on the players – especially those behind-the-scenes people you do not normally hear about – than the issues. In this presentation, Gavin discusses the political issues du jour and colors his analysis with stories about the people behind the news and the untold stories of Washington.
