3 Takeaways From Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi’s Motivational Keynote
Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi is not only one of NASA’s top astrophysicists, an inventor, professor, and TV personality, but also a motivational speaker who uses his personal story to empower those around him.
At our Inspire 2019 conference here in DC, Oluseyi took the stage to share lessons learned and empowering insights from his life and career. Here are three of the top messages that stayed with us long after his keynote was over:
1. IT’S UP TO YOU TO PROVE YOURSELF
Dr. Oluseyi met countless naysayers along his journey from rural Mississippi to the halls of Stanford and then NASA. And despite encountering people who doubted his abilities, Hakeem never stopped believing in himself. As he explains in moving keynotes, there will always be “haters”—but there will also always be those willing to extend a hand, grab a coffee, or lend an ear. And, ultimately, it is up to you to show the naysayers why they were so wrong with your work ethic and your drive, and to prove why your potential will never be limited by what others think.
2. YOUR PAST DOES NOT DEFINE YOUR FUTURE
We all come from different walks of life, and it is convenient to think that because our parents did or did not achieve certain things, that those same things are either expected of us or off limits to us as well. Dr. Oluseyi is living proof that your beginnings do not define your future. He shares in detail how he was tempted by lifestyles that he was surrounded by but found the strength to pursue other paths.
3. PURSUE THINGS THAT STOKE YOUR CURIOSITY
From a young age, Dr. Oluseyi was fascinated by physicist. Despite no real avenue to be formally trained at the level he needed, he taught himself Einstein’s Theory of Relativity and went on to win the Mississippi state science fair and attention from the science community. Today, he holds patents for the computer chips in the phones we all use each day and has worked on Nobel Prize-winning research teams. Dr. Oluseyi encourages and inspires others to chase after their dreams and focus on the areas that really excite them in life.
