Former Charles Schwab CEO Releases New Book
David Pottruck, former CEO of Charles Schwab and now an exclusive speaker with Leading Authorities, released his new book, Stacking the Deck: How to Lead Breakthrough Change Against Any Odds.
The book, available at Amazon, offers Pottruck's nine-step plan for leaders to follow, providing "a proven, practical approach for inspiring meaningful, lasting change across an organization."
Pottruck's 20 years of leading change at Charles Schwab helped lay the foundation for Stacking the Deck, which features interviews with some of the business community's most successful minds, including David Barger, CEO, JetBlue Airways, John Donahoe, President and CEO, eBay Inc., and Howard Schultz, Chairman, President and CEO, Starbucks.
The nine-step Stacking the Deck process is designed to mitigate the risks that come with change by having you take concrete steps to increase your change for success. The preparation does not make the change less bold-and it doesn’t guarantee success. What it does is create an advantage (or more accurately, a series of advantages).
The new book, with David Pottruck's proceeds being donated 100% to charity, is already receiving praise and great reviews, including Ambassador Charlene Barshefsky, former United States Trade Representative and Senior International Partner at WilmerHale, who calls Stacking the Deck "the ultimate user's guide to breakthrough change."
"In it, Dave Pottruck provides remarkably specific and practical advice on how to move from your vision of the future to company buy-in, team building, planning, execution, and metrics. He navigates with assurance and ease, step-by-step, to make you an inspired leader who succeeds. This is a must-read."
"Takeaway from Stacking the Deck: Success relies on strong leadership, process that works, and having the right team." @MariaBartiromo— David Pottruck (@davidpottruck) October 20, 2014
Ahead of Stacking the Deck's release, Pottruck discussed his process, breakthrough change, and a book he hopes will be relevant for decades.
Pottruck, who became Charles Schwab's co-CEO in 1998 and CEO in 2002, is also the author of the New York Times and Amazon best-seller Clicks and Mortar: Passion Driven Growth in an Internet Driven World. Currently, Pottruck is the Chairman of HighTower Advisors, a $25 billion wealth management firm, and serves on the Board of Directors of Intel Corporation.
As a Senior Fellow and adjunct faculty member, Pottruck teaches one of the most popular classes -- on leading transformational change -- at the Wharton School, the famous business school of the University of Pennsylvania. His course on breakthrough change earned him Wharton San Francisco's Outstanding Teaching Award in 2010 and 2012.
As a speaker, Pottruck answers the question: What does it take to be effective during a time of rapid change? Relying upon an expertise that spans finance, transportation, retail, and technology, Pottruck shows audiences how to turn changes into opportunities that create competitive advantage. Authentic and engaging, he offers what he learned from both his successes and failures and encourages Q&A and audience interaction so that he can become a part of the change process and help organizations succeed.
