Salon Dinner With Navy SEAL Rob O'Neill

by Sydney Bolling
Navy Seal Speaker on Missions and Leadership

Earlier this month, our Chicago team had the opportunity to sit down to dinner with former SEAL Team Six Leader Robert O’Neill, one of the most highly-decorated combat veterans of our time. In his discussion, Rob shared lessons from the more than 400 combat missions he’s been a part of, highlighting specific moments in his career that stand out above the rest.

During one of these stand-out missions, the rescue of Captain Phillips, Rob received the call to head out while playing with his young daughter. He recalls the emotional moment when he kissed his daughter goodbye, never knowing if he would see her again. Of all the challenges he’s faced as a Navy SEAL, he still considers the goodbye to be the hardest part.

Rob also described the team’s preparation for the hostage rescue, emphasizing that the little things matter, and can mean the difference between life and death. Making sure you’re ready for any situation that comes your way is key to carrying out a successful mission.

Throughout the discussion, Rob reiterated how these lessons about preparedness, as well as the importance of living by the mantra “never quit,” are applicable to every aspect of business and of life. The ingredients for success, no matter the circumstances, are: the right people, preparedness, decision making under pressure, and, above all, a commitment to never quit.

Rob is always a hit with audiences, and goes above and beyond at events. He has also just released a new book, The Operator: Firing the Shots That Killed Osama bin Laden and My Years as a SEAL Team Warrior, which can be purchased in conjunction with any keynote speech.
