The Circuit

Leading Authorities' roundup of thought leadership, trends, and personalities on the speaking circuit

If you were a kid when Larry Bird and Magic Johnson played on the Olympic Dream Team (I was 16!), then you have to scroll to the end of this week's Circuit to see a special event our team got to help make happen.

Also, this week - what to do when you're overwhelmed with disruptive tech, and shout-outs to some speakers doing big things in the communities they serve. Read, enjoy, have a great weekend!

Mitch Joel Book

Are You Connecting with Your Customers?

Is new technology super-charging your business or eating you alive? Disruptive innovation and communication leader Mitch Joel shared some insights from his book, Ctrl Alt Delete, on this podcast earlier this week. He explains why some business feel like they are in purgatory, and delivers some surprising tips for your digital marketing and podcasting strategies.

Perfect for Summer!

Congratulations to our friend Matthew Griffin – the CEO and co-founder of Combat Flip Flips – for being selected by the Aspen Institute as a 2019 Henry Crown Fellow. The class is made up of leaders between the ages of 30-45 who are tackling the world’s most intractable problems. Griff’s footwear and apparel company creates economic independence and stability in conflict and post-conflict regions around the world by basing its manufacturing operations in 5 different countries, hiring local labor, and giving back to the communities where they operate. (Think paying for the education of Afghan girls.) And you can help by buying and wearing your favorite summer staple – flip flops!

A Company of Values

“We’re a company of values, we’re also really nice people,” said Anthony Foxx, former Secretary of Transportation under President Obama and current chief policy officer for Lyft. At the Washington Auto show, he took an opportunity to talk about how the company differentiates itself from the competition by focusing on larger issues. “We’re marching towards what’s really going to enhance quality of life in cities,” he said while telling the audience how Lyft is remodeling itself to be a “transportation provider.”

A Rare Opportunity

One of my favorite colleagues, program consultant Jeff Robbin, had the pleasure of booking Larry Bird and Magic Johnson together at an event where they talked about everything from their NBA rivalry and playing on the “Dream Team” to their friendship today. It was a rare and special pairing that got rave reviews.
