I love the Olympics! (I’m sure you do too.) This weekend, I’m certain my television is going to be all Olympics, all the time. But in case you are stuck in a booth selling Girl Scout cookies with your daughter (me next weekend), or at the gym for a basketball tournament, or maybe at your in-laws house for dinner, here’s a round up of conversation starters if you need a break from the usual chit-chat.

How’s your investment portfolio holding up? In response to this week’s market volatility, economist Zachary Karabell—who spends his time making numbers make sense for the rest of us—wrote this article in The Washington Post about the machine-made drop and the man-made freak-out. “The fast fall and speedy rebound, therefore, is a market-generated phenomenon,” he explains, adding, “That doesn’t mean there’s no cause for concern, but concern should be about the changing nature of investing rather than anxiety that what is happening says something about the real-world economic forces shaping most people’s daily lives.”

Seen any Good Movies Lately?
How about the new Clint Eastwood flick that’s getting rave reviews? The 15:17 to Paris features the three heroes, Alek Skarlatos, Spencer Stone, and Anthony Sadler, who thwarted a terrorist attack on a train from Brussels bound for Paris. Putting himself in their shoes, director Clint Eastwood says of the heroes, "I don’t know what Clint Eastwood would have done. No one knows what you’re going to do in that situation unless you have lived it," says Eastwood. "And these three fellas have."

How About Those Eagles?
Which SuperBowl commercial was your favorite?!? Two super-smart marketing geniuses weighed in on who were the big advertising winners this year. Branding and innovation expert Mitch Joel gave his picks for the top seat, saying, “I think you see the polarization of great advertising on the Super Bowl – ads are either quirky or funny or the extreme tear jerker.” Wharton professor and best-selling author Jonah Berger explains why he disagrees with polling numbers and thinks Tide actually won the Super Bowl, saying the function of ads themselves has changed.
