{"id":36969,"date":"2016-02-18T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-02-18T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.leadingauthorities.com\/blog\/ron-fournier-millennials-are-generation-disruption"},"modified":"2016-02-18T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-02-18T05:00:00","slug":"ron-fournier-millennials-are-generation-disruption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.leadingauthorities.com\/uk\/blog\/ron-fournier-millennials-are-generation-disruption","title":{"rendered":"Ron Fournier: Millennials Are &quot;Generation Disruption&quot;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>This is a guest blog post by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.leadingauthorities.com\/speakers\/ron-fournier\/\" title=\"Ron Fournier\">Ron Fournier<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On the video screen high above my head, an unshaven young man sulks in a corporate board room. \u201cI quit,\u201d he tells his boss. \u201cThis job is different than I thought it would be.\u201d Suddenly, out of nowhere, appears a middle-aged announcer. \u201cStop!\u201d he intones. \u201cDoes this situation look familiar?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is the opening scene of a popular YouTube parody called, \u201c<b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Sz0o9clVQu8\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Millennials in the Workplace Training Video\">Millennials in the Workplace Training Video<\/a><\/b>.\u201d I\u2019m watching it from the front row of a hotel ballroom \u2013 at the annual conference of a major trade association that invited me to deliver their keynote address. I\u2019m up next. But first, the video: \u201cA new type of worker has entered the workforce,\u201d the baritone announcer continues. \u201cThey\u2019re called Milliennials\u2014and they\u2019re terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laugh along knowingly with the audience of CEOs, most of whom are Baby Boomers with a shared frustration toward their kids\u2019 generation. But my insides are gripped by anxiety, because I\u2019m about to deliver a speech titled, <i>\u201cMillennials: Generation Disruption\u2019s Influence on Politics, Business and Culture.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure this crowd is going to get it. So I start with something upon which we agree. America is in the midst of a jarring confluence of changes:<\/p>\n<ul><li>An economic transition as big as the 19<sup>th<\/sup>-century shift from an agriculture economy to the industrial era;<\/li>\n<li>The largest technological surge since the industrial era<\/li>\n<li>A demographic makeover so dramatic that nation\u2019s collective kindergarten class is majority minority<\/li>\n<li>An extended period of war.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p><i>(Heads nod in the audience.)<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I explain that history has its echoes. A similar set of change marked the Gilded Age a century or so ago and shaped the nation\u2019s founding a century before that.<\/p>\n<p><i>(Just beyond the stage lights, I notice people taking notes.)<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I continue: In times like these, social institutions that bind us together fail to adapt as quickly as people change \u2013 small businesses, big businesses, churches, charities, banks, schools, police, courts and the media. The public loses faith in those entities, which either adapt or perish.<\/p>\n<p><i>(When I offer data on this trade association\u2019s trust deficit, I hear a gasp.)<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Of course, no institutions have changed less\u2014or are loathed more\u2014than politics and government. I spend a few minutes reminding the audience of Washington\u2019s dysfunction and the structural changes needed to revive it.<\/p>\n<p><i>(By now, a pall has come over the room. Is there any hope?)<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I tell them to look to a potentially brighter future through the lens of a <em>new kind of politics <\/em>and a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">new kind of people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The new politics is populism. Yes, I know: Populism is as old as America itself, but it\u2019s at its most potent in times like this, when the public gets mad as hell and decides not to take it anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Americans are asking, \u201cWhat side of the barricades are you on?\u201d The tea party and Donald Trump exploit anger on the far right, while Elizabeth Warren and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders stir the pot on the left.<\/p>\n<p>Populism may be the one uniting force in American politics. Across the spectrum, people want the United States to withdraw from the rest of the world and focus on domestic issues, reduce special deal for the rich, curb violations of the public\u2019s privacy by the government and big business, and stem the power of big banks and other large financial institutions.<\/p>\n<p>I ask the crowd: Who are the new kind of people? Somebody answers, \u201cMillennials!\u201d Yes, like the unshaven office worker on the parody video: spoiled, entitled and lazy. I\u2019ll grant you that, but hear me out: These kids are shaped by the times.<\/p>\n<p>They are purpose-driven, having learned at an early age just how fragile life can be in the post-911 world.<\/p>\n<p>They are impatient. They crave change and choices. What would you expect from a generation native to the internet?<\/p>\n<p>They are consensus-builders. After all, they were raised in a <i>shared<\/i> economy. Even their video games are joint adventures.<\/p>\n<p>They are pragmatic and less ideological than Baby Boomers, their expectations tempered by a weak economy and a lifetime of political dysfunction.<\/p>\n<p>They are civic-minded creatures who crash barriers to positive change. Don\u2019t tell a typical member of this can-do, boot-strapping generation that something can\u2019t be fixed just because it hasn\u2019t been fixed before. They\u2019ll hack it.<\/p>\n<p>In many way, Millennials measure up to the nation\u2019s three past \u201ccivic generations:\u201d The so-called Greatest Generation that won World War II, the generation that elected Abraham Lincoln, and the generation of the Founding Fathers. The biggest difference: Unlike past civic generations, Millennials don\u2019t see politics and government as a force for good.<\/p>\n<p>And so they are becoming a generation of social entrepreneurs, working outside government to create innovative and measurably successful solutions to the nation\u2019s problems.<\/p>\n<p>I give the CEO several examples. I remind them that Bill Clinton said in 1993 that there\u2019s not a problem in American that\u2019s not being solved somewhere in America. He was correct. But he was ahead of his time: Neither government or the public had the ability to connect problem-solvers and bring their solutions to scale.<\/p>\n<p>Two decades later, the radical connectivity of the internet has given a generation shaped by wrenching change the ability to do great things. They are electronically armed populists. For every problem, Millennials have an app for that.<\/p>\n<p><i>(The audience laughs knowingly.)<\/i><\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, I tell the CEOs what it takes to hire, retain, and market toward the largest generation in U.S. history; how they need a purpose beyond profit, and products that provide choice, efficiency, community and the power to solve old problems in new ways.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, a new type of worker has entered the workforce \u2013 and they could be terrific.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a guest blog post by\u00a0Ron Fournier.
