Maggie Alphonsi

Maggie Alphonsi is a trailblazer in international women’s rugby whose influence extends far beyond the pitch. Renowned as one of the most prominent figures in women’s team sports, she has built a legacy as an elite athlete, media commentator, and advocate for diversity and inclusion.

Before retiring from international competition in 2014, Alphonsi earned 74 caps for England, scored 28 tries, and was instrumental in securing seven consecutive Six Nations titles. She played a pivotal role in England’s historic 2014 Rugby World Cup victory—their first in two decades—and helped the team earn the BBC Sports Personality Team of the Year award.
Following her retirement, Alphonsi broke new ground in sports media. She has provided live commentary for Sky Sports, BT Sport, and the BBC, and in 2015 became the first former female player to commentate on men’s international rugby for ITV at the Rugby World Cup. She continues to feature in ITV Sport’s rugby coverage and was also the first former female player to write a column for The Telegraph.
Her leadership extends into rugby governance as well. In 2016, Alphonsi became the first England Women’s player elected as a National Member of the Rugby Football Union Council—one of only four women among 56 members.
