An internationally recognized economic expert, Romero has led transformative changes to financial regulation in the U.S. With over two decades of public service under four U.S. Presidents and two unanimous Senate confirmations, she served as the Special Inspector General for the financial crisis bailout program (TARP) and later as a CFTC Commissioner during the rise of digital finance. Her unique perspective at the intersection of law, regulation, and rapid innovation—especially in digital assets and AI—makes her a go-to authority for navigating disruption in today’s financial system. Most recently, she served as a Commissioner of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) from 2022 to 2025. Under her leadership, the CFTC’s Technology Advisory Committee produced landmark reports on digital assets and artificial intelligence. Previously, Goldsmith Romero served as Special Inspector General for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (SIGTARP) at the Treasury Department. In this role, she led a watchdog agency that conducted high-impact oversight of the government’s financial crisis response, recovering $11.4 billion and helping bring criminal and civil charges against hundreds of individuals and institutions involved in fraud and misconduct.
Earlier in her career, she served at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), advising two SEC Chairs and working in the Enforcement Division. She has also been a litigator at major law firms and held a federal judicial clerkship. A dedicated educator, she has taught courses on corporations securities regulation, financial oversight, emerging technologies, and cryptocurrency at Georgetown University Law Center and the University of Virginia. Christy Goldsmith Romero holds a J.D. from Brigham Young University and a B.S. from Old Dominion University.
