About Tracy Walder
Download ProfileTracy Walder was a college student at USC when a chance encounter with a CIA recruiter on her sorority house’s pink beanbag chair launched her into the world of espionage. Straight out of undergrad, she joined the CIA’s Counterterrorism Center, working under alias identities and traveling solo through war zones and black sites to help disrupt global terror networks. Often the youngest and only woman in the room, she earned multiple commendations from U.S. and allied intelligence services for her work in high-stakes environments across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
Exclusively represented by Leading Authorities speakers bureau, Walder brings to the stage real-life stories of spycraft, split-second decision-making, and lessons in resilience and leadership from inside America’s intelligence community. Walder later joined the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office as a Special Agent specializing in Chinese counterintelligence, one of the rare women to serve in both agencies’ operational ranks. In a single year, she helped dismantle a notorious foreign espionage ring, tackled cyber-crime, and cracked fraud cases.
She’s the author of The Unexpected Spy, a digital bestseller translated into four languages and optioned by Netflix. Walder is the National Security Contributor for News Nation, and was featured in Netflix’s American Manhunt: The Search for Osama bin Laden and Discovery Channel’s Lost Monster Files, where she investigates myths through a national security lens. A TED speaker, she captivates audiences on topics ranging from foreign policy and counterterrorism to the evolving role of women in intelligence.

Why do we have to have a reason for the path we choose in life? We often get so caught up in trying to answer the question “why?” that an opportunity passes us by. In this talk, former CIA officer and FBI agent, Tracy Walder, uses her own unique life experience to demonstrate how embracing the question “why not?” can lead to life-changing opportunities. Relying on gut instincts, she shares how she went from a history major at USC to the CIA counterterrorism center, from taking down a Chinese spy ring as a special agent in the FBI to becoming a history teacher at an all-girls school.
