Since 1997, Mary has led her brand consultancy, Portas (formerly Yellowdoor), working with some of the world’s most recognised brands including Clarks, Louis Vuitton, Swarovski, Dunhill, Boden and Westfield. With a strong focus on people, culture and changing consumer expectations, Mary and her team create innovative strategies that combine commercial insight with creativity and instinct.
Mary is widely credited with transforming Harvey Nichols into a modern fashion powerhouse during the 1990s, joining the company’s board at just 30 years old. Earlier in her career, she also worked with John Lewis and Topshop.
Her television career began in 2007 with the hugely successful Mary Queen of Shops, inspired by her “Shop!” column for the Telegraph Magazine. The series, which followed Mary helping struggling independent retailers reinvent themselves, earned nominations for both BAFTA and Royal Television Society Awards. She later fronted the hit series Secret Shopper, which became a popular international success.
In 2011, Mary was appointed by then Prime Minister David Cameron to lead an independent review into the future of the British high street. Her influential report outlined 28 recommendations aimed at revitalising town centres and supporting local businesses.
An accomplished author, Mary has published several bestselling books including Windows: The Art of Retail Display, Work Like a Woman and Rebuild: How to Thrive in the New Kindness Economy, exploring topics ranging from retail and leadership to workplace culture and the future economy.
Mary describes her proudest achievement as the creation of Mary’s Living & Giving Shops for Save the Children. Now considered the UK’s most profitable charity shop chain, the initiative has raised more than £13 million to support children and families worldwide.
