As co-host of The Weekend on MSNBC, a regular PBS NewsHour contributor for Brooks & Capehart, and the former associate editor of The Washington Post, Capehart brings decades of experience covering politics, culture, and the pressing issues of our time. The New York Times bestselling author of Yet Here I Am, his voice is sought after for its depth, nuance, and ability to cut through the noise. In addition to his work with MSNBC, he is a regular moderator of panels at the Aspen Ideas Festival and for the Aspen Institute, the Center for American Progress and at the Atlantic Dialogues conference and the Brussels Forum of the German Marshall Fund. He has also moderated sessions at the Atlantic’s Washington Ideas Forum and for the Connecticut Forum.
Capehart has interviewed important political leaders and cultural icons including Presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, Vice President Kamala Harris, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Attorneys General Loretta Lynch and Eric Holder, former Secretarys of State Antony Blinken, John Kerry and Hillary Clinton. Capehart has also interviewed actor Colman Domingo, comedian Colin Jost, tennis legend Billie Jean King and author Percival Everett. His MSNBC special “A Promised Land: A Conversation with Barack Obama” was nominated in 2021 for an Emmy for “Outstanding News Discussion & Analysis.” His MSNBC special “Pride of the White House” won a GLAAD Media Award for “Outstanding TV Journalism — Long Form” in 2022.
Capehart was deputy editorial page editor of the New York Daily News from 2002 to 2004, and served on that paper’s editorial board from 1993 to 2000. In 1999, his 16-month editorial campaign to save the famed Apollo Theatre in Harlem earned him and the board the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Writing. Capehart left the Daily News in July 2000 to become the national affairs columnist at Bloomberg News, and took a leave from this position in February 2001 to serve as a policy adviser to Michael Bloomberg in his first successful campaign for New York City mayor.
