Matthew Dowd: 2018 Midterm Elections
Matthew Dowd is a well-known and respected cultural commentator and strategist. For the past 30 years, he has helped shape strategies and campaigns for CEOs, corporations, foundations, governments, candidates, and presidents. Most recently, he served as chief political analyst for ABC News where he appeared on This Week, Good Morning America, and Nightline. He regularly contributes to publications including National Journal, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Christian Science Monitor, and the Huffington Post. He is also the author of the 2017 book A New Way: Embracing the Paradox as We Lead and Serve, which examines the role of leadership in disruptive times, and the creator of the online community Listen.To.Us., which brings like-minded individuals together to discuss politics and government. With triumphant political campaigns under his belt and independence from both political parties, he uses his wealth of experience and knowledge to provide audiences with a view of America today and the ways our political, economic, and social institutions need to respond—covering not only politics but cultural, economic, and spiritual trends. His plea for politicians today is that they place country above party. He is exclusively represented by Leading Authorities speakers bureau.
Building a Name-Brand Candidate. Dowd’s political work includes serving as the chief strategist for two winning reelection efforts—Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 2006 campaign and President George W. Bush’s second White House bid in 2004. His innovative approach on the 2004 and 2000 campaigns led the bi-partisan American Association of Political Consultants to name him “Strategist of the Year.” In 2004, he oversaw all of the Bush campaign’s media, message development, targeting, and research. Dowd has also given strategic advice to President Barack Obama after the 2010 midterm elections, Bono at the One Campaign, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Prior to his work for President Bush, Dowd worked for 25 years for Democratic candidates around the country, including Senator Lloyd Bentsen and former Texas Lieutenant Governor Bob Bullock, who Dowd helped to win two terms as his chief campaign consultant.
Now Serving Politics and Prose. Matthew Dowd is coauthor of the wildly popular New York Times best-seller Applebee’s America: How Successful Political, Business, and Religious Leaders Connect with the New American Community, which examines the tactics used by two great politicians and a groundbreaking company to thrive in an era of immense change.
Dowd has taught seminars on campaigns and communication at Stanford, Harvard, Yale, the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Chicago, and the University of Southern California.
Over the last 20 years, he has been an active entrepreneur, founding three highly successful companies including Vianovo and Public Strategies. He additionally founded Paradox Capital, a social impact venture fund which is focused on for-profit social good companies.
Unpredicted and Unprecedented: How We Got Here and Where We’re Going. With three decades spent crafting campaigns and reporting on the latest news out of Washington, Matt Dowd has his finger on the pulse of the latest happenings on Capitol Hill, Wall Street, in Silicon Valley, and on Main Street. Blending historical anecdotes and current events, Dowd offers an overview of how we got to this “unique, disruptive moment in our country’s history,” what we can do now to regain control of our democracy, and his personal viewpoint of where we’re headed. Specifically, he dives into what happened during the consequential 2020 election and how the current volatility in economy, politics, and health is creating tremendous unpredictability in the political landscape. Jam-packed with real insights and “aha” moments, Dowd’s talk is a fast-paced, customizable look at how and why a new America is taking shape—plus how that new America will look and feel for politicians, businesses, and civilians.
Leading Through Uncertainty. At a time of immense change, disruption, and dysfunction in America today, Matthew Dowd gives a roadmap of what might help leaders navigate this uncertain time successfully – whether it is dealing with voters, consumers, or employees. Dowd, a vehement independent having worked both sides of the aisle, has given advice to presidents, CEOs, governors, foundations, and associations on how to win the hearts and minds of their constituencies. He brings this 30 plus years of experience and expertise to audiences around the country in explaining where America is today and what values and strategies will be best in achieving success. Dowd has been described as “one of the most common sense, independent, and brightest minds” in America today, and if a leader at any level wants to move forward in an era of profound confusion and disconnection his speech is a must.
George W. Bush’s chief strategist thinks Jeb Bush has ‘incredibly low’ odds of being the Republican nominee
It went great and got rave reviews. Matthew Dowd was very personable and engaging with attendees who wanted pictures or a quick word. He (and your team) were very easy to work with on the event. In particular, I appreciated his short conference call in advance to discuss the event. It showed that he cared about making sure it was valuable to our associations.
