Laila Ali Shares 3 Ways To Compete Like A Champion

Laila Ali knows a thing or two about what it takes to be a champion in all aspects of life. In addition to being a best-selling author, lifestyle brand CEO, television host, and keynote speaker, Ali is an undefeated four time women’s boxing World Champion. Her boxing record speaks for itself: 24-0 with 21 knockouts.

At the Inspire Conference in DC, Ali got real about the commitment, hard work, determination, and self-belief that being a champion requires. Honest, open, and to-the-point, Ali never beats around the bush as she shares her story of venturing into the boxing world as a newcomer and leaving as a dominating force.

Here are three lessons Ali shared with our audience:

To be a champion, you not only have to believe in yourself, you must also prepare. Doing the homework and preparing for the moment will allow a natural amount of confidence to flow. And whether you’re in the ring, or just asking for a raise, it won’t be a struggle to believe in yourself, and your abilities, if you know that you have done everything possible to increase your potential for a successful outcome.

Champions live in the uncomfortable space between who they are and who they could be. Discomfort signals growth, and you will never grow into the champion you are destined to be by staying in your comfort zone. If you can keep pushing yourself, and working harder than the day before, you will continue your journey to becoming the best version of yourself.

Any time we strive for greatness, failure inevitably accompanies us. But the trick is not becoming a victim, or backing down, but owning failure and learning from it. Every time Ali failed throughout her career, she managed that struggle by asking, “What could I have done differently?” and “How can I make sure that never happens again?” Maintaining a positive attitude, and understanding that sometimes being told no or taking a loss is more about timing than anything else, and should be used as a moment to learn and grow.

Ali also shared the motto she lives by, “Expect it, and accept that it’s going to happen.” In other words, don’t even allow doubt or fear to creep into your mind.
